From the Principal
Today we celebrated our opening Mass for the school year. We remembered not only Christ's sacrifice, but we also celebrated the community that we are, and we gave further thanks for the year that is ahead.
I extend my sincere appreciation to the Sisters of Mercy who were able to join us, to Most Rev Martin Ashe, Father Thang Vu, Gabrielle McMullen AM, Mercy Ministry Companion Trustee Director, and all parents, grandparents and special friends who joined us.
On a personal level, I would like to thank you, the student body, for the reverence shown throughout and thank all the staff.
Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday which marks the start of Lent – the season of 40 days leading to Holy Sunday. Lent is a season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbour. Renewal is the key word. The name Lent comes from an old English word, Lencten, meaning Spring, a time of renewal and reflection.
Pope Francis calls on the faithful to embrace this time as an opportunity for spiritual renewal, aligning with the overarching theme of the Jubilee Year, Pilgrims of Hope. In his Lenten message, the Pope invites us to return to the essentials of faith, deepen our relationship with God, and extend compassion to others in a world yearning for hope.
The Lenten season traditionally begins with Shrove Tuesday, a day of preparation before Ash Wednesday. The term "shrove" comes from the old English word shrive, meaning to receive absolution for one’s sins. Across many cultures, this day is observed with feasting - most famously with pancakes - symbolising the last indulgence before the fasting period begins.
May this Lent be a time of hope, transformation, and grace. As I write this our Holy Father is critically ill in a Rome hospital; let us all pray for Pope Francis’ health and speedy recovery.
Heavenly Father, grant healing and strength to Pope Francis.
Enfold him in Your love and renew his spirit.
Guide him with wisdom through every trial.
Fill him with unwavering hope and boundless peace.
