A Busy Start!

From Year 10

This fortnight for Year 10 has been an exciting blend of curriculum-enriching excursions and cross-year level connections as part of the Pastoral program.

Excursions play an important role in enriching learning experiences by providing hands-on engagement with real-world environments. They enhance understanding through exploration, foster curiosity, and facilitate social interaction among peers in a range of subjects. This is certainly the case for the Year 10 Politics elective, where students visited Parliament House. In addition, Year 10 students visited the National Gallery of Victoria to engage with the rich connection between art and spirituality. Visiting such important public institutions not only enriches learning but also connects students with vital aspects of civic life—access to government and rich cultural records and conservation.

This week in Nourish, Year 10 students had an incredible opportunity to mentor their Year 7 mentees, fostering valuable connections and building confidence. The session wrapped up with an exhilarating Kahoot game filled with fun questions about school, general knowledge, and AFL, sparking laughter and excitement. As we dive into this busy term, students are encouraged to embrace the challenge and make the most of it!

Year 10 Politics Excursion – Victorian Parliament House

On Monday, 7 October, the Year 10 Politics class went on an excursion to the Victorian Parliament House. They met with Ellen Sandell, MP for Melbourne, and had a tour of the Legislative Assembly chamber, the Legislative Council chamber, and the Parliamentary Library. They learned about the history of Parliament House and the process required for the passage of legislation. Below are some student reflections.

Ms Elisa Litvin

Having the amazing opportunity to see Parliament House in person was eye-opening. Getting to be in the rooms where decisions for our state are made was incredible, and the excursion gave us a deeper understanding of the importance of the building.

Our excursion to the Parliament was really informative and educational. I really enjoyed it, and I’m sure that the rest of my classmates had a great time as well. I liked how we were courageous and curious enough to ask questions, and how our questions were nicely answered. My highlight was when we got to tour the Parliament. The Legislative Assembly stood out to me. It was colourful, with ceilings adorned with gold and a shiny gold-like chandelier hanging. Overall, I've personally learned a lot and can confidently explain how laws are made in Australia.

Year 10 Religious Education Excursion – National Gallery of Victoria

Below are three students’ reflections on their learning:

Last week, we went to the NGV for religion. It was really fun and fascinating looking at the different artworks in the gallery and getting a better understanding of some of the religious pieces.

The first week has been a hectic but exciting week. We had the opportunity to connect with our Year 7 buddies, having fun talking about what they were looking forward to heading into Year 8 after this term and playing games. The Politics class also got the opportunity to go to the State Parliament House on Monday, where we got to meet Ellen Sandell, who is the Member for Melbourne. The whole year level also got the opportunity to go to the NGV to look at artworks and understand how to analyse them for our religion class. Overall, it was an extremely eventful and enjoyable first week back at school.
