A Journey to Begin With

From Year 10

The theme for Year 10 in 2024 is "A Journey to Begin With," which represents a pivotal moment for our students as they embark on their preparations for senior school. This year is not just about transition; it's about laying a solid foundation for their future. This is well supported by the three subjects that we offer for our Year 10 students: Future Me, GROWTH Program and Success Advisor Sessions, in which students learn about themselves, unfold their interests and strengths, and select the pathways they choose to pursue.

The STRIVE Program has been a highlight of the week for all students. This four-day initiative has proven to be highly successful, and students have thoroughly enjoyed it. The program is designed to teach our Year 10 students how to face new challenges and to equip them with skills to cope when encountering difficulties in life.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Students learnt about the importance of practising gratitude in everyday life and embrace the power of resilience when experiencing difficulties.
  • A ‘healthy competition’ session at Bounce and a student-led Scavenger Hunt in the city which pushed the physical and mental limits throughout the day.
  • A hands-on seminar with Elevate Education on study skills and time management, promoting independent learning and develops routines to balance study and lifestyle.
  • An inspirational seminar with Eric Agyeman who is an empowering speaker for young people in leading self, leading others and the ‘cultural force’ of language in shaping identity and self-belief.
  • Team challenge activities took place at the College, helping to nurture growth mindset and collaborate with their peers
  • Students also attended the Melbourne Museum, where they learnt about the diversity of South-Eastern First Peoples, and some of the protocols for acknowledging First Peoples' cultures and traditions. They also participated in a Road to Zero session where they learnt about the safe system approach to road safety.

I would like to express my gratitude to all Year 10 students who took part in the STRIVE Program. Their enthusiasm and efforts to participate in each session were to be commended. I would also like to thank our Year 10 Pastoral Leaders and other supporting staff for their support throughout the four days.

Student Reflections

We have just finished our first week back at school!
So far we have been settling back into school and meeting the new teachers.
We have all been excited for next week’s STRIVE program, as it offers a lot of fun activities such as going to Melbourne Museum and going to Bounce! We have had our mentor sessions to the year 7’s, which most people would say was a very positive time. We all talked to a group of year 7s and tried to create a space where, hopefully, throughout their time at the College, they feel they can come to us for support or just a nice chat. To sum this week up, it was a great first week and year 10 is going great for us so far!

We had our first week as year 10s this week, and it was definitely a mixture of excitement as well as an adjustment. It has been fun catching up with friends and re-familiarising ourselves with the routine. We are also all looking forward to the STRIVE program next week, where we will be partaking in some fun activities, which include on-site incursions as well as excursions.

This first week of Year 10 has been a great introduction to a new year. We have experienced many new classes focusing on our newfound passions. It has been great getting to see our classmates again and getting to know each other. The memories we have created in the last few weeks of school, meeting our new buddies and starting the STRIVE program, have been fun and meaningful projects that we can all enjoy. We are looking forward to having an amazing year and making new friends. We hope everyone has a good year.
