From Year 7
Year 7 2025 TLC Sessions
As our current Year 7s have settled into life as secondary schoolers, our future students have also begun their journey from Grade 6 into high school. Over the next few weeks our 2025 Year 7s will be visiting the school in small groups as our TLC orientation program begins. Our first of four TLC groups joined us on campus on Monday in a lively session. The group of around 50 students had the opportunity to hear for our current Year 7 leadership team about their transition to high school. It was a polaroid moment for our young leaders as not too long ago, they sat on the other side of the room!
There was an opportunity to discuss some things that the group was excited about and some things they might be worried about. The group of incoming students had lots to say, from excitement about the upcoming camp, to nerves the amount of homework they will get! Overall, the session was an awesome opportunity for the group to connect with one another and begin a process that for many, will be the biggest change in their young lives thus far.

Changing Our Perspective in Art
Year 7 Art students have been exploring the concept of negative space in drawing. Negative space refers to the areas around and between the main subjects of an artwork. By focusing on these spaces, students enhance their understanding of composition and proportion, leading to more realistic drawings. This technique also encourages critical thinking, helping students to view their subject from new perspectives.

Year 7 Art Teacher
In art, we have learnt many ways to improve our drawing capabilities such as drawing the outlines of objects to add the details without changing anything of the original image, such as drawing teeth that shouldn’t be showing, to draw what we can see, rather than what we think should be there. We have also drawn items such as a rubber duck with it in front of us for reference, as well as drawing an image upside down for new ways of observing photos, as well as to use the righthand side of the brain. This has helped with improving the accuracy and realism of our drawing.

In art we are focusing on negative space and the outline/background of drawings/images. We are doing this by getting given pictures and filling in the space around the image. Then we simply draw what the outline is and the finished picture being a duck. We didn’t know this though as the pictures are also upside down so we didn’t know what they were and couldn’t use the ‘easy way of thinking’.

In art with miss Cunnington we are learning about negative spaces. We have learnt how to focus on the shapes of an item or thing. We have done an activity when we had to pull a piece of paper out slowly out of a folder. When doing this we had to copy what we saw, and once we finished this drawing, we flipped the paper around and saw what we had drawn. I found this activity really entertaining and fun to do with my fellow classmates. I really enjoyed this art class, and it is one of my favourites.
