From Year 7
Year 7 Zoo Excursion
This week our Year 7 cohort attended the much-anticipated excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. While the weather was touch-and-go and even some brief torrential rain; the conditions made for an adventurous outing as students braved the elements.
The excursion was a combined effort from the Science and STEAM teams, with students exploring the themes of Animals, Enclosures and Conservation. Working in small groups, students were allocated a particular animal and completed a booklet of information.
Given the weather, many of the animals were very active, with lions roaring, tigers and elephants roaming and even a symphony of hoots from some of the monkeys. While we came for an educational experience, students were able to see and experience a range of special interactions with animals who normally can be challenging to view.
Overall, it was a successful day with students really throwing themselves into their assigned work and bringing to life some of the topics they have been studying in the classroom.

We Year 7s were tasked with studying a specific animal in the zoo and writing about specific scientific and technical information concerning their habitat and environment. Initially the day got off to a rough start with the soggy conditions, but this did not stop us from having an absolute blast while gaining a greater knowledge on specific things like animal taxonomy and the food web. My group and I had lots of enjoyment journeying across the zoo and immersing ourselves in the zoo's multitude of diverse animals and enclosures.

During our Save a Species activity in Year 7 Science, we were able to visit the Melbourne Zoo as a whole Year 7 cohort. It was fun walking around in our groups and being able to look at all the different species while learning about their environment and how we can save their species as a whole. Unfortunately, it was raining the whole time, but despite that we all adapted and soon pulled out all our umbrellas!. For me personally, it was one of the top excursions of the whole year.

We were very grateful that we got to step outside of school all together to help our understanding of the animals at the zoo. As we were walking to the zoo the weather was terrible as many of my peers were drenched in water except the ones who found shelter under an umbrella. The zoo had many different types of enclosures you could take photos of, and I kept my eyes on the gorilla enclosure as it was my science animal helping me learn more about the habits and traits of a gorilla!
