Examinations & Learning Highlights

From Year 8

The Year 8 students have successfully completed their first set of formal examinations, marking an important milestone in their academic journey. This experience allowed them to become familiar with the structure and environment of examinations, providing valuable insights into the expectations and procedures associated with formal assessments. Through this process, students gained firsthand experience in managing time, retrieval practice, and applying critical thinking under exam conditions.

I commend all the year 8 students on completing their exams and embracing this new experience with a positive mindset and determination. Their willingness to approach the examination process with an open mind and a commitment to doing their best is a testament to their resilience and prepares them for future examinations.

Learning Highlight – Year 8 Art: Elijah Armato

It has been another fantastic term of year 8 Art students’ ‘kiln’ it in their ceramics unit, and their printmaking unit has been similarly im-press-ive! Students have not only been exploring the skills of moulding and shaping their concepts into fully realised, three-dimensional sculptures, but they have also been extending this study into printmaking, as well. With an emphasis on positive and negative space, and the way this affects the way the eye explores a piece of art and the subject within it, students have translated drawings into rubber plates, which they have painstakingly carved and transferred onto paper with nothing but ink, pressure, and precise technique! As a printmaking artist, myself, it has been a joy to see students take their initial steps into a wider world of art after year 7, preparing them for their next art journey in year 9.

This year in Year 8 art we explored the units of ceramics and printmaking. In ceramics we created a ceramic piece of our own design which was fun and challenged our creativity in a 3D medium. Next, we did printmaking where we carved out our design in lino and then printed it on to paper with a variety of different colours of ink. This was also fun and allowed me to experiment with a different art form that I had not used before.

Art in Term 3 & 4 has been a blast! In Term 3 we made ceramics using white clay, we learnt about the importance of the structure & understanding your design before you make it. In Term 4 we got to make linocuts using a rubber plate, we learnt about the different types of cutting tools including the U & V shape tools. Overall, I really enjoyed the Year 8 art unit & look forward to exploring different areas of art next year.

This semester, my class had the privilege to create two different pieces of artwork such as print art and a ceramic object. I personally really enjoyed being able to participate with this activity because it was something that I had never learnt about and experienced making before. I was extremely happy with how my work turned out and overall, I had so much fun with making everything.
