From Year 9
Year 9 students commenced the new term with positive energy and are well-equipped for the busy term ahead. In Nourish last week, we had the privilege to have Angelica from This is your Body. With her experience as a clinical nutritionist, she shared an interactive and evidence-based presentation to Year 9 and 10 students on nutrition, body image and how to look after their mental health and wellbeing. A number of Year 9 students have put themselves forward to participate in leadership training which is part of their consideration for Vice Prefect positions in 2025. Students are commended for their initiative and commitment to the training which offers invaluable learning experiences for all students involved.
Students from our Japanese sister school, Kyoto Seibo Gakuin, are coming to Melbourne to visit this coming week. They will visit a number of classes with their host students. This provides an incredible exchange experience not only for the Japanese students, but for our student as well. I look forward to hearing about their experiences in the coming weeks.

This term in year 9 English we have started looking at Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. We watched a movie adaptation of Shakespeare’s play and now we are working through the play together in class. It has been challenging and entertaining trying to understand Shakespeare’s language in Romeo and Juliet, it has also been really interesting to explore such a well-known play in depth. Here, we are acting out the opening scene of the play, where the two houses end up in a sword fight. At the end of the unit we will be performing our own adaptations of Romeo and Juliet as a final assessment, this will be a good way to test our understanding of the play as well as have some fun.

Over the past week, many year 8 & 9 students have participated in a leadership workshop after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These workshops train and guide us in leadership, as we prepare ourselves to go for a Vice Prefect position in 2025. These programs teach us about what makes a good leader, and how those qualities are important. It has been really fun as we collaborate and communicate with peers, and work in groups doing activities such as escape rooms and puzzles!

Last week in Food Technology, we completed our final assessment task for the trimester - a noodle box design task, inspired by Asian cuisine. We had 50 minutes to prepare, cook, clean, and present our dish. I enjoyed how the experience allowed me to showcase my culinary skills, whilst under time pressure (felt a bit like Masterchef!), and making a dish all by myself. The recipes were created by ourselves after exploring a variety of noodle-types, Asian vegetables, herbs and spices. As we come to the end of our trimester in this subject, we're wrapping up our 'food around the world' cultural topic, and get to make and bake some sweet treats to wrap up this unit!
