Science Reflections and Looking Ahead

From Year 9

With just one more week left in Term 1, there’s a lot to look forward to as students wrap up this busy period. The final week will offer various learning opportunities across subjects, allowing students to consolidate their knowledge and prepare for Term 2. It’s an exciting time, with students reflecting on their progress and getting ready to embrace new learning experiences.

During Period 3 on Monday 24th March, a Junior College Assembly took place, celebrating students in Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9, receiving the following roles for this year; Class Captains Semester 1, House Leaders and Vice Prefects. This celebration acknowledged their leadership and dedication to making a positive impact in our St Aloysius College community, as they strive to inspire and guide their peers.

On Friday, March 28th, the College’s House Athletics Carnival took place, showcasing a variety of athletic talents from our students. It was a fantastic day full of competition and camaraderie, with the students participating in a variety of track and field events. The day not only highlighted individual and team-based performances, but also encouraged House spirit. I commend all the Year 9 students for participating and supporting their Houses on the day.

Learning Highlight: Science

Coordination and control is a unit that gets Year 9s to deepen their understanding of how their bodies work by focusing on two body systems; The Nervous System and the Endocrine System. In this unit of study, students are to draw, annotate and explain concepts allowing them a full range of opportunities for understanding. Students tested their reflexes through a series of tests bringing content to life. Year 9s will be finishing this unit in the coming weeks. Following Coordination and Control, the Year 9s will be beginning their unit on Immunology; the study of how our body protects us from pathogens. The students will be exposed to more investigations allowing their scientific skills to further develop.

Year 9 Science Teacher

So far this year in Science we have been learning about the Nervous System and a little about the Endocrine System as part of our coordination and control unit. We have learned about the stimulus-response pathway, a voluntary movement where the nerves and neurons deliver messages from the stimulus (event of change) to the response (body's reaction to the stimulus) and how it differs from the reflex pathway, an involuntary response to a stimulus that takes a faster and more direct route, bypassing the brain in order to react in protection quickly. We also briefly covered the Endocrine System, learning about how hormones are created and how they interconnect with the Nervous System and neurons. I have found this unit highly engaging and interesting to discover more about the brain and body's connections, and I am very excited for what else is to come in Science this year.

This term in science, we have been closely looking at the nervous system in relation to our current unit; coordination and control. We have done various interactive activities, such as making piper-cleaner neurons, experimenting with our reaction times, and learning how to arrange a stimulus response. The lessons are very informative, but fun and engaging at the same time. I particularly enjoyed learning about the 3 different types of neurons, their structures, and the role that they play when delivering messages through the body. I am definitely looking forward to continuing this unit, and others throughout the year!
