Connection and Education

Mercy in Action

On Thursday, 31st October, Mr Blomeley and Miss De Bono had the pleasure of escorting six students to Mercy Place for their Mercy in Action community service. We were given a tour of Mercy Place and met three lovely ladies who had been eagerly awaiting our visit. They really enjoyed chatting with us and shared stories about their children and grandchildren attending St Aloysius College, as well as their own wonderful experiences and connections to the College. They were thrilled to hear that we are now a co-educational school. They enjoyed listening to our students talk about their future hopes and aspirations. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with the elderly in our community.

We really had a wonderful time during our visit to the retirement home. I particularly enjoyed the stories they shared with us. We learned about the different care levels available, as well as the activities that keep residents entertained, such as being taken to the cinema and various games that provide them with happiness and engagement. Overall, we had a really good time at the retirement home.

In our house groups, we were given the privilege to visit Mercy Place in Parkville, where we met three elderly women who all shared a connection with our school, St Aloysius. They spoke of their lives and were very inquisitive about our day-to-day lives as Year 10 students. Personally, I enjoyed talking to Gail, who was hospitable and eager to tell us about her daily ventures at the residence. While it was heart-warming, this Mercy in Action programme also showed us how nursing homes function and the ordinary people who attend to and care for the elderly residents. Overall, I am very thankful for the hospitality shown by the staff and carers, as well as the three residents. I look forward to more outreach excursions like this in the future.

On Thursday, a group of selected Year 10 students attended Mercy Place. We met three elderly women, with whom we discussed our interests and hopes for the future, as well as hearing about their lives. The visit was overall a wonderful experience and gave us an insightful view of life in a nursing home. I hope to visit again.
